I’m not talking about some big spirit or entity in the sky. I’m not talking about who 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 have brought you into existence or what 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 be waiting for you when you make your way out.
I’m talking about you & me, as creators, and the stories we tell ourselves about our existence. If you identify with the concept of imposter syndrome or have ever felt like you haven’t done enough to earn others respect, your status, or your current situation, it’s probably safe to assume you haven’t given yourself the props you deserve lately. It’s not easy; doing the work and then convincing yourself that you really DID just do the work.

If you write things, you’re a writer.
If you’re the boss of things, you’re a goddamm boss.
Have you ever heard someone speaking in their imposter syndrome? Mine shows up sometimes when I meet new people, especially people I look up to. Here’s what mine sounds like:
“Oh well I’m sort-of a photographer but...” “Oh, ah, welllll, I mean I do some copywriting ...” “Oh yeah, haha, no... “I’m just...” It’s the “well”s and the “sort-of”s and the “but”s that I pad my identity with to keep myself safe from... from what?
From fear? Already feeling it. From failure? Inevitable. From seeming confident? That’s the goal.
Here’s my rule for talking back to my imposter-thoughts: If you wouldn’t say it when pitching a client or in a job interview, don’t say it to yourself or at the bar.
Writing extra, limiting words around your title and your story isn’t keeping you safe from anything. You’re already scared: isn’t that why you’re hiding behind conjunctions and half-truths? You’re going to fail or fuck up at some point. When was the last time you actually succeeded at being perfect? And as far as seeming confident or proud or self-important? I think we both know we’re just using that one as an excuse... so go ahead, get confident.
