No not your capital-e, Kanye West big “Ego” but your egos: your girlfriend ego, your athlete ego, your artist ego, your adventurer ego.
We all create different roles and identities for ourselves to live out and when we do so, we often write them job descriptions and requirements such as “I have to cook a homemade, organic meal for my family every night” or “I have to create a piece of photography work to share online at least four times a week.” But what happens when these rules and identities start to conflict and compete? What happens when the job requirements of your girlfriend ego, fitness ego, and girl boss ego stifle that deeper, inner voice that is all encompassing YOU?
Your egos are not the same as your goals.
Your ability to succeed as a lover, creator, business women, motivator, feeler will not be threatened by listening to your inner voice—the one begging to skip the grocery and order in so you can walk the dogs or write in your journal, the one driving you towards a walk in the woods rather than in the studio for an afternoon, the one that trusts in your deep ability to prioritize the non-negotiables and return to all the other versions of yourself in time.
Check your egos. How loud are they today? Ask them, just for a moment, to settle down and then: LISTEN.
